Sarah Deckard, an Administrative Coordinator at one of BMWC’s major project sites, was participating in a new-hire orientation when a fellow employee suddenly experienced a medical emergency. As the situation unfolded, Sarah stepped in to help. Relying on her CPR training, she quickly assessed the individual, recognized signs of a serious cardiac event, and began providing assistance while other team members cleared the area and contacted emergency responders.

Sarah’s calm demeanor and swift actions, combined with CPR, were critical to the positive outcome. Before first responders arrived on site, the individual regained a pulse. Emergency personnel later confirmed that the immediate actions taken by Sarah and those assisting were instrumental in saving the individual’s life. In recognition of her life-saving actions, Sarah was presented with a Life Saving Actions Medal by one of BMWC’s major clients. She has also been nominated for the American Heart Association’s Golden Hard Hat Award, which recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership in health, safety, and emergency response. Sarah’s actions serve as a powerful reminder that safety extends beyond the jobsite and that being prepared can truly save a life.

“This recognition highlights the importance of the CPR and AED training we provide across BMWC,” said Clay West, EHS Director. “Sarah’s ability to remain calm under pressure and put that training into action demonstrates exactly why we invest in preparing our people for emergencies.”

Sarah’s story reinforces a core belief at BMWC: when employees are equipped with the right training and empowered to act, they can make a difference. Her response not only helped save someone’s life but also exemplified the culture of caring and preparedness that defines BMWC.
